UN Secretary-General Caught Meeting with Al-Qaeda-Linked HTS Leader

The UN Secretary-General’s meeting with an HTS leader—a terrorist linked to Al-Qaeda—proves the UN’s ongoing legitimization of global jihadism.

The United Nations has once again proven its complete moral bankruptcy, as its Secretary-General was photographed shaking hands with a senior leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)—a terrorist organization with direct ties to Al-Qaeda. This disgraceful meeting is yet another example of how the UN continues to legitimize and empower terrorists while demonizing democratic nations like Israel.

Who is HTS?

HTS is a jihadist militant group operating in Syria, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra, Al-Qaeda’s Syrian branch. Despite attempting to “rebrand” itself in recent years, HTS remains a radical Islamist organization that enforces Sharia law, carries out executions, kidnappings, and assassinations, and actively collaborates with Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists.

The fact that the UN Secretary-General is openly meeting with a figure tied to this group is beyond disgraceful—it is outright collaboration with terrorism.

The UN’s Pattern of Supporting Terrorists

The United Nations has long portrayed itself as a neutral arbiter of global peace and security, yet its actions repeatedly reveal a troubling pattern of supporting and legitimizing terrorist organizations.
The latest controversy, in which the UN Secretary-General was caught meeting with a leader of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)—a known Al-Qaeda affiliate—is not an isolated incident. It is part of a much larger history of the UN providing cover for extremist groups while targeting democratic nations like Israel.
Nowhere is this hypocrisy more evident than in the UN’s handling of Hamas and Hezbollah.
Despite these groups being responsible for indiscriminate rocket attacks, suicide bombings, and cross-border kidnappings of Israeli civilians, the UN has consistently failed to condemn their terrorism.
Instead, it has shielded them from accountability, focusing its outrage almost exclusively on Israel’s self-defense operations.
Worse still, the UN’s own agency, UNRWA, has been exposed for employing Hamas operatives—some of whom directly participated in the October 7 massacre. Documents and intelligence reports have shown that UNRWA staff not only harbored terrorists but also helped facilitate attacks, raising serious questions about the UN’s true role in Gaza. The organization’s complicity is not limited to Palestinian terror groups.
The UN has also refused to condemn Iran’s direct missile attacks on Israel, including the unprecedented ballistic strikes launched on April 13 and October 1, 2024. While Israeli civilians were targeted by hundreds of Iranian ballistic and cruise missiles, the UN remained silent, failing to even acknowledge Iran’s blatant acts of war.
Yet when Israel retaliated, striking Iranian military sites responsible for these attacks, the UN immediately condemned Israel—exposing its double standard on self-defense. Beyond the Middle East, the UN has ignored the war crimes of jihadist groups in Syria, Iraq, and Afghanistan, rarely taking action against terrorist networks that target civilians and minorities in those regions.
Instead, its focus remains on singling out Israel at every opportunity, passing more resolutions against the Jewish state than against any other nation on Earth.

The UN’s Legitimization of Radical Islam

By meeting with an HTS leader, the UN is essentially recognizing a terrorist organization as a legitimate political entity. This move is a direct insult to every victim of jihadist violence and a slap in the face to countries that actually fight terrorism.

Imagine the outrage if an international leader met with ISIS commanders—yet when it comes to Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups like HTS, the UN seems more than happy to engage in diplomacy.
